3G Base-stations to USB Services promised by Picochip

As CES was drawing to a close there has been undoubtedly hundreds of excellent projects, which were on show, but never had the coverage or time deserved by them.

Nevertheless, one that deserved special coverage has been an announcement made by Picochip based in the United Kingdom. Picochip’s next generation femtocell technology was unveiled by it underlined witht he ability of replicating an entire 3G broadband base station in factors as diminutive as USB mobile broadband dongles.

The company said that the unique technology named picoxcell would let the various network operators to add to their products, the femtocell technology. This means, a number of their mobile-based products such as set top boxes and cable modems, which could then be activated following the USB device’s insertion.

The vice president for marketing at Picochip, Rupert Baines said that although the proposition may sound incredible, people could be able to complete 3G broadband base station on a mobile broadband dongle within a matter of months.

Baines that viewed last year as having shown the versatilily of the femtocell technology, added that they believed that offering the capability to place a femtocell on a mobile broadband dongle enabled massive opportunities for Picochip.
