Decision on Nearing the final Phase
It has been declared by TFL that they are in the final stages of discussion regarding the tender to make available Wi-Fi access to 120 subversive stations by the time the Olympics begin for people travelling back and forth. .
The firm has stated that it would say which of the mobile operators they would be offering the contract to for providing the facilities to access the Internet from the platforms and not in the train when they were actually on the move between on station and the other. It is believed that O2, Everything Everywhere, Vodafone and Three were trying to avail the mobile broadband contract while BT and Virgin Media were trying for the fixed line part of the contract.
TFL’s Director for Strategy and Service Development, Gareth Powell stated that they were reaching the last phase of the tender process. He said that London Underground was going ahead with all the necessary spade work to establish the required facilities and that it was carrying out the work as per schedule to ensure that the project will be completed as per plans. He also said that they would announce who the service provider they had selected was in the early part of spring, allowing a lot of time for the clients to know about it well in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The contract was offered after a trial run with BT’s OpenZone at Charring Cross Station located in Central London.
