The VLV (The Voice of the Listener and Viewer) reports that almost 10 per cent of the houses in the UK would be without Freeview with the rollout of next generation mobile network. It is estimated that 2.3 million houses in the UK would be without Freeview with the arrival of 4G LTE.

Currently 600 MHz, 700MHz and 800 MHz bands of the radio spectrum is used by Freeview. In order to provide mobile phones super-fast broadband speeds, in the UK, 4G LTE will be using 800 MHz band and to deliver 100 Mbps broadband services to fixed locations also the same band would be used.

The two cannot exist together on the same band and the telecoms regulator in the UK, Ofcom has already noted this problem. According to the estimate of the regulator, the use of 800 MHz band by 4G LTE would affect around 760,000 homes in the UK. The figure is closer to 900,000 according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Voice of the Listener and Viewer estimates the figure to millions.

However, there is a solution for this problem. A filter which has the capability of filtering out the 4G signals is to be fitted to the side of Freeview signal booster. The Government has already earmarked 180 million Pounds for this purpose. Suppose a person wants both, Freeview as well as a 4G phone, it might give rise to a problem.

Ofcom has also put forward another proposal of forming a company by name MitCo. It will be the duty of the company to install Freesat dish in houses which are affected by 4G/Freeview/800 MHz fallout. After the roll out of 4G LTE, MitCo would be in existence only for a year and the company would be jointly operated by Ofcom and the providers who come out successful in the auction. Though the idea of Freesat is good, the problem would be with the landlords. Landlords may not permit the fixation of Freesats in their premises.

It is believed that VLV has an ulterior motive of ring fencing the 800 MHz band for Freeview. Sophie Chalk of Voice of the Listener and Viewer said that the Government’s decision to sell spectrum to broadband providers with a view to raise millions of Pounds would act as a detriment to the interest of millions of viewers of television. This decision is against the UK’s system of public service. According to the UK’s public service broadcasting system, universal access to all citizens to all programmes made by the terrestrial channels should be granted. There is also a fear that with the growth of 4G mobile broadband, Freeview would be reduced to a 20 channels TV by the year 2018.

Ever since the company was started way back nine years ago in 2003 in the UK, they have been experiencing steady development.

With unprecedented growth ever since its inception operator Three can now contend with the big operators like O2, T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone.

The wonderful thing is there does not seem to be any let up in the momentum of Three’s growth either. They company is now planning on increasing their customer data base to ten million in another three years. It had been reported by MobileToday that the operator would be adding to their existing retail outlets through out the UK so that their objective could be met.

The operator at present has 328 stores in the country and they anticipate that they would be able to enhance this to 400 in the course of the coming two years other than also increasing their presence via retail outlets. Three also have ideas to expand the number of their network locations from 12,600 to 18,000 by the year 2015 to have enough room for their customer base and their ever increasing requirements.

Another feather in the cap for the mobile network operator was that 89 percent of their sales have been direct in comparison to the 15 percent that they had in the year 2007. Moreover Three have also succeeded in lowering their churn rate from 1.7 percent to 1.1 percent in the same time frame the previous year.

Their greatest challenge for Three currently is to deal with the growing demand for 3G mobile data. The network operator has experienced four times its growth in their mobile data use in the past one year.

The company has been leaders in mobile broadband and were their first to provide free mobile data in a certain mobile tariff of theirs. In fact this was one of the major causes for their success, other than providing great facilities and service at fantastic costs.

The point Mr. Williams, Chief executive of Avanti Communications Group, London was trying to get across was that there have been plenty of plaintive cries from those people who were residing in remote, hard to reach locations, stating that they had no access to broadband connectivity. Well, this article as explained by Mr. Williams states that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for such locations. With the help of satellite broadband these remote regions can successfully be connected to the Internet.

To all those firms and broadband providers who have been stating that trying to provide broadband connection to people living in difficult to reach areas in the country is not a feasible proposition as far as they are concerned, this wonderful technology called satellite broadband that is just the perfect facility. This can be availed of by anybody who is unable to get an earthly broadband connection. Moreover the satellite broadband is quite easily to be set up, and compares with prices offered by the terrestrial connections, and the great news is that one does not have to depend on the already present cable facilities or their closeness to the exchange in their locality.

The Hylas1 satellite from Avanti Communications Group, London that was set off on the 26th of November two years ago in 2010 was said to be the first high speed broadband satellite that was released in Europe. It is sated to offer steady super-fast speed broadband coverage through the whole of the UK and is available to anyone residing in the UK as of this day. With Avanti’s Hylas 1 satellite, there is no more need for any one to feel that they are living in a region where they cannot avail of fast broadband connections.

A warning has been given by a pressure group crusading for high quality broadcasting that when the next-generation mobile broadband is rolled out, at least 10 per cent of TV in the UK would be replaced by 4G phone networks. A donation funded lobbying body, the Voice of the Listener & Viewer which is otherwise called VLV, demands that people should be able to receive Freeview without spending money on special filters, even after the rollout of next generation mobile broadband.

Previously VLV had responded to Ofcom’s Consultation seeking the best way to stop 4G deployment at 800 MHz. Roughly about 10 per cent of the UK’s households would be able to receive degraded Freeview signals after the government’s shifting of frequency band from analogue to digital television, making way for mobile operators. From the auction proceeds of 800 MHz bands, the Ministry of Fun has allocated 180 million Pounds to pay for mitigation and some of them who have responded to Ofcom’s Consultation on dispersing the case have agreed with the regulator while only a lesser number agreed with the methodology.

By placing a filter on the aerial wire, interference can be controlled to a great extent. The filter has to be on the aerial side of the installed booster. Nobody knows the number of boosters in use and fitting of filter becomes even harder as a number of boosters are kept in the loft beside the aerial. Many viewers don’t even know whether they are in possession of a booster or not. Ofcom, the regulator has a plan to form a new company, MitCo. The new company will send out filters with instructions for installation. Those who have problems could ask for a filter. If it doesn’t work, then Mitco would install equipment to receive Freesat or some other satellite services which is capable of working on very different frequencies. However, the respondents to the Consultation quickly pointed out the drawbacks of this option.

Multiple TVs and multiple headaches: One of the main issues in the UK is that majority of homes in the country have more than one TV. According to Communications Consumer Panel, only 40% of the houses are single-set houses. It means that majority of the households are to spend their own money for filters. Freeview, the jointly run service by ITV, BBC, BSKyB, Channel 4 and transmitter biz Arqiva is of the opinion that this method is not fair.

Consumers were happy with Freeview and have made huge investment in Freeview equipment. Anyway, there is no guarantee for continuity of service. Many households would not be having sufficient support to deal with the interference problems and for many more, the Freeview service will be cut off altogether. Arqiva, which operates majority of transmitter sites for cellular networks and broadcast TV also criticize the government proposals.

There are some real risks with regard to the fitting of filters. If the filter is incorrectly installed, it will not function, and secondly for fitting filters, consumers have to shell out money and it may lead to platform-switching. Hence Arqiva is of the opinion that in such cases it is fair that MitCo should bear the cost of installation of filter. As per the present proposal, any surplus on the 180 million Pounds would be split 50:50 between the government and 4G license holding operators. However, Everything Everywhere did not agree with this option. Everything Everywhere suggested that if the government is ready to give up its 50 per cent share, the provider would find money for an even better transmission filter on the base stations.

Telefonica, EE’s rival operator said that the whole thing is nothing but a minor problem created by commercial broadcasters. They wanted to safeguard their revenue streams and now it is presumed that they won’t create any more interference. The operator said that the users of DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) are also customers. It is also accepted that MitCo should remain in one form or the other. As far as the devotion to broadcast television is concerned the UK is second to none. Many countries have no fear of 4G interference as they are in possession of a more diverse TV market. Some of the respondents are of the opinion that by the time 4G coverage reaches the rural regions where old people live and where the Freeview signals are weak, thanks to the advancement of the technology, the issue will vanish. However VLV is stubborn that the government has to do something or else more than 2 millions of homes would be having nothing but blank screens.

This small village that is made up of just twenty five residences had been going through a lot of trouble in availing signals for digital TV and had only a slow fixed-line connectivity till a few residents got together to create the Wilford Bridge Broadband Project.

The East Anglian Daily Times reported that the provision of Wi-Fi connectivity implied that the business enterprises and the residential homes in the region were in a position to access downloads speeds of up to 30Mbps.

The fibre Wi-F facility work when radio signals are sent from the tower of a church close to Hollesley directly to the home of the user.

The Managing Director of Buzcom, Mr. Gary Disley stated that Shingle street was expecting that it would be bypassed for high speed Internet connectivity in the roll out that was taking place across the county, with the support of the government’s Broadband Delivery UK.

He stated the company tries to fill the gap between the slow speeds of dial-up connectivity and the extremely high speed fibre-optic technology and that they attempt to provide a solution to places that could possibly fall into that gap.

Other than Shingle Street, Fibre Wi-Fi facility is also accessible in the Essex districts of Uttlesford since the fall of the previous year and also at Maldon, a region that availed of the same facilities in the year 2010.

If people want to avail of this free offer, they would simply have to visit any one of the Costa coffee shops or look for an alternative O2 Wi-Fi hotspot, register for the service just once and utilize the connection. O2 states that they have ever so many Wi-Fi hotspots in plenty of public areas and even these locations would provide the free Wi-Fi connections all over the UK.

Another interesting point is that the free Wi-Fi experience does not end with just thirty minutes. If the person happens to be a member of a Costa Coffee Club, he/she can have unlimited Wi-Fi for free with absolutely no limitations. In spite of the fact that when someone enters the coffee shop for a coffee it hardly takes more than half an hour, the fact that he/she has unlimited minutes can come in really useful. Moreover, becoming a member of a Costa Coffee club also does not cost anything, therefore if anyone has ideas of taking rest in one of the Costa Coffee shops this idea of free Wi-Fi connectivity can be a great bargain.
